 HISTORY OF THE GREENFIELD HOUSE

The Greenfield House was built by Sylvester S. Ware a prominent builder who improved the water power provided at that time to Athens by the Nottawaseppi River. A plot map of the area dated 1873 shows the house as owned by Mr. Ware. Crafted in the Italianate architectural style, which is identifiable by wide projecting cornices with heavy brackets (corbels) and richly ornamented windows, porches and doorways, for almost 150 years the house was admired for its beauty and uniqueness.

Members of the Greenfield family lived in the home until 1972. At this time the home was turned into a duplex, and eventually declined to the state of being condemned as uninhabitable.

The house was eventually foreclosed on and auctioned in November 2017, when it was acquired by the Ramirez family. Since acquiring the house, the Ramirez family has worked tirelessly to ensure that The Greenfield House becomes a Community Center for the Athens area which would be a community gathering space to be cherished for generations to come.

The Athens Area Historical Society (AAHS) acquired the Greenfield House in March 2019 through a Bargain Sale of $1.00.
